Lists of "signs you are highly intelligent" are everywhere. Some have real support, many are flattering stereotypes. Here is a sober version.
Traits linked with strong reasoning
- Learns quickly. Picks up new rules and skills with fewer examples.
- Spots patterns and connections. Notices that two unrelated things work the same way.
- Curiosity. Wants to understand how things work, often from a young age.
- Good working memory. Can hold several ideas at once while thinking through a problem.
- Verbal and abstract comfort. Enjoys ideas and explaining them.
Popular signs with weak or no support
- Being messy, a night owl or left-handed. There is no solid evidence these predict IQ.
- Talking to yourself. Everybody does it, and it often helps thinking.
- Struggling socially. Some clever people do, many do not.
- Doing badly at school. Boredom can hide ability, but it does not prove it.
What you cannot tell by looking
Intelligence takes many forms. Someone quiet may be reasoning deeply; someone talkative may be bluffing. Behaviours are weak clues, and a checklist can never be a diagnosis.
Smart is also about what you do
Humility, willingness to change your mind and persistence matter as much as raw speed. Many people with high scores underperform because they stop trying when work gets hard.
The only way to compare reasoning is to measure it. Take the Real IQ Test and see how you compare, with an honest margin of error.
